Rona Liu
"Having a live person in front of me, or a live still life—it feels similar to my day job because it feels collaborative. I’m collaborating with the light. I’m collaborating with the subject matter. I’m getting to know the person's body, and I’m getting to know how the light shifts on it. I’m not just doing this on my own; I’m doing it with them, and then the art evolves the more I know about this person."
RONA LIU is a production designer whose stylized vision has driven the looks of Pixar's Turning Red and the Oscar-winning animated short Bao. Her work, as both a shading artist and designer, can also be seen in Finding Dory, Coco, Incredibles 2, Onward, and the short Weekends. Although she cites Sailor Moon as an inciting incident in her teenage art goals, these days Rona's personal work finds her unique sensibility and brushwork colluding with more classical modes.
